Disease rise due to opioid crackdown

One of the myriad unintended consequences of limiting prescription opioids is the acceleration of diseases like HIV and Hepatitis C.

Nina Feldman, an NPR reporter based in Philadelphia, discusses the recent rise in these diseases in the Philadelphia area. And the data show that it is opioid addicts sourcing injectable drugs like heroin from the street that is driving the disease spike.

Published HIV rates are shown in the graph above from the Philadelphia Department of Health. And 57% of new HIV cases are Hepatitis C positive. This does not mean that clamping down on over-prescribing of opioids is bad policy, just that it has many consequences, and a longer weaning off period may be required for many addicts.
