AEI hosts Spring 2019 Leadership Network Summit

0 1

This April, AEI welcomed the tenth cohort of the Leadership Network with 80 leaders from across 28 states and Canada. We also welcomed our first members from Delaware, Montana, and the United Kingdom. This biannual Leadership Network Summit brings together hand-selected, mid-career professionals for an exclusive leadership development and policy education program. To date, the network has expanded to include more than 725 members leading in the public, private, and non-profit sectors across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

From April 24–26, Summit attendees, including self-described progressives, liberals, conservatives, libertarians, and independents, gathered at AEI’s headquarters. Participants met for the first time during the Summit’s opening speed networking reception.

Participants then heard from numerous AEI scholars on everything from the decline of the American Dream to the history of public education. Participants also split up into specialized session groups that delved deeper into policy discussion on criminal justice reform, paid family leave, veterans’ issues, healthcare reform, internet freedom, and the politics of poverty reform.

Speakers over the three-day summit included John Bailey, Rebecca Burgess, Jim Capretta, Tim Carney, Jonah Goldberg, Rick Hess, Roslyn Layton, Aparna Mathur, Charles Murray, Brent Orrell, Michael Strain, and Matt Weidinger. Participants also heard from both former and current AEI presidents Arthur Brooks and Robert Doar.

Professional media trainer, Beverly Hallberg, spoke to the group about how to most effectively frame their messages when speaking publicly. Participants then used these tips in an interactive 60-second “elevator pitch” competition that put their public speaking skills to the test. The competition was judged by a panel that included Beverly Hallberg from District Media Group; Andy Quinn, formerly of AEI and now chief speechwriter for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell; and Veronique Rodman, Director of Public Affairs at AEI. First place was awarded to Deborah Flora, Co-Executive Director of Bring It Up Media. Second place was a tie between Sal Nuzzo, Vice President of Policy at James Madison Institute, and Kim Borchers, President of Bird Dog Recruitment and Consulting LLC.

Following the Summit, participant George Sparks, President and CEO of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, had this to say: “I have found my Intellectual Mother Ship at AEI. They are a trusted resource for all that has made life better for countless people, and they inspire me to help ensure that we never lose that focus for our society.”

The next Leadership Network Summit will take place this fall at AEI’s headquarters in Washington, DC. If you’d like to learn more about how to get involved with this exclusive AEI network, please contact [email protected].
