The Dumbest Things I Did on Medium – Andre Jeter

Writing for money was just one of them

First off, let me say that I’m a noob when it comes to writing on Medium, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. In fact, this is my fifth article. I’ve posted a short story, five articles, and committed on two articles, and as of today, I have one fan (A good friend of mine) and four views.

I know it takes time to generate a following, but I blame myself for the mistakes and don’t doubt that I can improve.

So, I’m writing this article for YOU because I care, and I don’t want you to make the same mistakes I did, feel down about it, then plop yourself on the couch and binge-watch your favorite Netflix show. F.Y.I mine is Locke & Key.

Read the rules on curation

It’s there for a reason. Did I read them? Hell no. Why? Because I thought it was a complete waste of time and to be honest…it was boring. Now, I read that shit almost every day before I post an article. Did I have an article curated? Nope. But that doesn’t stop me from writing and it shouldn’t stop you. Here’s a good one you need to read, Understanding Medium Curation.

It’s not about you…sometimes

People read articles on Medium for these two top reasons: 1. they want to learn something. 2. they want to read about how to get rid of something that hinders them in life. Everything else is just entertainment which is not wrong to write. You can write about how you’re feeling, how your job sucks and stuff, and still make money. But those who do have a HUGE following, write every day, and their articles are entertaining.

Don’t be shy. Say hi

Medium is not just a place where people can read and write articles. People gather on Medium to meet and engage with each other. If I like an article, I respond to it. Why? Because I’m a nice person? Yeah. But also it builds your reach, not by a lot, but some. WARNING! WARNING! Don’t go and respond to every post you read. If it touches your heart, by all means, be truthful about it. Writers want to hear how their articles impacted the lives of their readers.

If you can, write every day

This is a no brainer, but I wasn’t doing it. Until now. I write every day. It builds my writing muscles, my visibility grows, and I get to encourage someone who reads my article…I hope. You need to be writing every day too. I know. I know. You heard it a thousand times, well, here’s one thousand and one, write every day.

It’s NOT all about the Benjamins, baby

You want to make money writing on Medium. Who doesn’t? When I was reading articles on how people were killing it on Medium, all I saw was dollars signs. I wrote horrible articles dreaming of getting some of that sweet cash. But if that’s your number one reason for writing, then you’re going to have a hard time. First off, I don’t know anyone who knocked it out the ballpark with their first article. I’m sure someone has. If you know someone who has please let me know. Okay, back to the whole money thing, here’s an idea, why not write compelling articles that entertain, encourage, teach, or help people?

That’s all I have to say about my misadventures on Medium. It can be an excellent place for you, if you follow the above rules. And read, read, and read all the articles you can. You’ll learn what not to do much faster than making a mistake yourself. I know you’ll do great. Learn a lot. Reach out to other writers. But most importantly, have fun.
